The cement silo (or cement tank) is the core steel structure vessel within a concrete batching plant, designed for the enclosed storage of bulk powdery materials such as cement, fly ash, and mineral powder. It serves as critical equipment for ensuring the mixing plant’s continuous production, stable material supply, and effective dust control for environmental protection.

Cement Silo

Basic Structure and Composition

The cement silo features a vertical, cylindrical steel structure that is integrally welded. It consists primarily of the following components:

  1. Silo Body: The main structure is formed by rolling and welding cylindrical steel plates. The bottom features a conical hopper (with an inclination angle of ≥60°) to facilitate the gravity-driven flow of powdery materials. Material: Q235B carbon steel; wall thickness: 4–6 mm (thickened for large-capacity models); surface finish: anti-corrosion and anti-rust paint.
  2. Support Legs: Supported by 4–6 vertical columns (round or square tubing), each fitted with a base flange that is welded and secured to pre-embedded anchor plates in the foundation.
  3. Silo Roof Safety Components (Essential):
Pulse Dust Collector:Filters dust generated during the loading process, ensuring environmental protection and preventing external emissions.
Pressure Safety Valve:Automatically opens to release pressure in the event of internal overpressure, preventing structural failure (silo rupture).
Inlet / Feeding Pipe:Connects to the pneumatic conveying pipeline of a bulk cement tanker.
Guardrails & Access Ladder:Provided for inspection and maintenance purposes.
  4. Material Level Monitoring System: High and low-level indicators (rotary vane or capacitive type) provide real-time display of the material level, triggering an alarm for high levels and a notification to replenish material for low levels.
  5. Discharge & Arch-Breaking System: Manual/Pneumatic Discharge Butterfly Valve: Controls the flow (opening and closing) of discharged material. Pneumatic Arch-Breaking Device (Air Cannon / Vibrator): Blasts away caked powder and eliminates “arching” blockages within the silo.
  6. Auxiliary Equipment: A screw conveyor is connected to the bottom of the silo to transport the powdery material to a weighing hopper.

Working Principle

  1. Loading: A bulk cement truck pneumatically conveys the powdered material, forcing it into the silo through a loading pipe; a silo-top dust collector filters out dust, while a safety valve ensures pressure safety.
  2. Storage: The fully enclosed structure provides protection against rain, moisture, and caking, while a level indicator monitors the stored volume in real time.
  3. Discharging: Upon opening the discharge valve, the powdered material flows into a screw conveyor under its own weight; should blockages occur, an arch-breaking device is activated to clear the obstruction.

Main Types (Commonly Used in Mixing Plants)

  1. Vertical Integral Cement Silo (Mainstream)
●Structure: Cylindrical body with a conical bottom; height ranges from 10 to 25 meters. Features a small footprint and large storage capacity.
●Applications: Commercial concrete batching plants and fixed-site construction plants (standard configuration for HZS50–180 models).
  2. Sectional (Assembly-Type) Cement Silo
●Features: The silo body is shipped in modular sections and assembled on-site using bolts. Offers convenient transport and can be dismantled for relocation to other sites.
●Applications: Large to extra-large capacity requirements (200–500 tons) and remote construction sites.
  3. Horizontal (Foundation-Free) Cement Silo
●Features: Square/horizontal structure with a low profile (≤5 meters). Requires no concrete foundation and is ready for immediate use upon placement.
●Applications: Mobile concrete batching plants, short-term construction projects, and urban sites with height restrictions.

Key Performance Features

  1.  Fully Enclosed and Eco-friendly: Features a completely sealed design with zero dust leakage, meeting all environmental regulations and preventing cement from becoming damp or deteriorating.
  2. Safe and Reliable: Equipped with a triple-protection system—including safety valves, material level alarms, and arch-breaking mechanisms—to effectively prevent silo explosions, material blockages, and overflow.
  3. Stable Discharge and Precise Metering: Ensures a steady discharge rate and integrates seamlessly with screw conveyors to facilitate precise material feeding, thereby guaranteeing the accuracy of mix proportions.
  4. High Durability: Constructed from thickened steel plates and treated with anti-corrosion finishes; designed for a service life of 8–10 years under normal operating conditions, with minimal maintenance requirements.
  5. Wide Adaptability: Capable of storing a diverse range of powdery materials, including cement, fly ash, mineral powder, lime powder, and more.

Cement Silo

Key Selection Points

  1. Based on Production Output
●HZS50/60: Two 50-ton silos (for cement + fly ash)
●HZS90/120: Two to three 100-ton silos
●HZS180: Three to four 150–200-ton silos
  2. Based on Site Conditions
●Limited space or height restrictions: Select horizontal silos
●Long-term fixed plant: Select vertical integral silos (offering high cost-effectiveness)
●Frequent site relocation required: Select modular bolted silos or horizontal foundation-free silos
  3. Based on Material Types
Multiple types of powdery materials (cement + fly ash + mineral powder): Utilize separate silos to prevent cross-contamination

Key Points for Operation and Maintenance

  1. Foundation Stability: The support legs must be securely anchored; fully weld the legs to the embedded plates. Periodically inspect for vertical alignment to prevent settlement or deformation.
  2. Loading Procedures: Activate the dust collector’s vibration mechanism during loading to prevent clogging of the filter bags. Immediately halt the loading process upon receiving a high-level alarm to prevent the silo from overfilling and overflowing.
  3. Discharge Anti-Clogging: Activate the arch-breaking device prior to initiating discharge; promptly clear any material arches that form. Before shutting down the system, ensure the screw conveyor is completely emptied to prevent material caking and jamming.
  4. Routine Maintenance
  • Dust Collector Filter Bags: Inspect monthly; replace annually.
  • Arch-Breaking Air Discs: Maintain a dry air supply; drain condensate periodically.
  • Level Indicators: Calibrate monthly to prevent malfunctions.

Common Faults & Causes

  • Dust Emission During Feeding: Dust collector filter bags are damaged or clogged → Replace or clean the filter bags.
  • Silo Roof Safety Valve Leakage: Seals have aged → Replace the gasket.
  • Poor Discharge / Arching: Powder material is damp; cone angle is too small → Activate arch-breaking mechanism; enhance drying measures.
  • Support Leg Deformation / Weld Cracking: Foundation settlement; overloading → Cease operation for reinforcement; repair welds.
