Screw Conveyor

Commonly known as a screw conveyor (auger), it is the core equipment for conveying cement, fly ash, mineral powder and other powdery materials in concrete batching plants. It is mainly installed between cement silos and mixing hosts to realize closed, continuous and uniform conveying of powder materials.

Basic Structure

1. Drive Unit: Motor + reducer (gear / cycloidal pinwheel); some are equipped with variable frequency speed regulation to control conveying capacity.
2. Screw Main Body: Screw shaft (solid / hollow); screw blades (cold-rolled, wear-resistant).
3. Casing: Round or U-shaped steel pipe, sealed and dustproof.
4. Inlet & Outlet: Inlet connected to the bottom of cement silo; outlet connected to weighing hopper or mixing host.
5. Hanger Bearing / Intermediate Hanger Bearing: Intermediate support for long-distance screws to prevent shaft sagging.
6. Sealing Components: Shaft-end dustproof seals and gaskets to prevent dust leakage and ingress.

Working Principle

The motor drives the screw shaft to rotate → the screw blades push powdery materials to move axially along the cylinder → materials are conveyed from the feeding end to the discharging end.

Features: Closed conveying, dust-free, continuous and stable, especially suitable for easily flying powder materials such as cement and fly ash.

Performance Features

1. Fully enclosed structure with no dust overflow, meeting environmental protection requirements – essential for batching plants.
2. Stable conveying and uniform flow ensure accurate metering without affecting concrete mix proportions.
3. Small footprint; can be installed horizontally or at a small inclination (generally ≤30°).
4. Simple maintenance, simple structure, low failure rate and few wearing parts.
5. Variable frequency control available, cooperating with the control system to realize fast/slow feeding and improve metering accuracy.

Operation & Maintenance Notes

1. Prohibit long-term high-speed no-load operation–easily causes bearing overheating and accelerated blade wear.
2. Must start no-load before loading– full-load starting easily causes overload and motor burnout.
3. Prevent foreign matter ingress– iron blocks, plastic bags and agglomerated cement may jam the screw or even break the shaft.
4. Regularly inspect shaft-end seals– damaged seals cause dust leakage/ingress and bearing seizure.
5. Lubricate intermediate hanger bearings regularly– the most vulnerable part of long screws.
6. Avoid over-inclination use– excessive inclination reduces conveying capacity, causes serious backflow and motor overload.
7. Empty materials before shutdown– prevent excessive load at next startup.

Common Faults & Causes

1. Material blockage: Material damp agglomeration, excessive feeding, blocked outlet, excessive inclination.
2. Dust leakage: Worn shaft seal, damaged flange gasket, cracked cylinder.
3. Excessive noise: Worn hanger bearing, eccentric screw shaft, foreign matter jamming.
4. Motor overheating: Overload, unstable voltage, bearing seizure.
5. Insufficient conveying capacity: Worn blades, excessive inclination, material backflow.
