What is the difference between a vertical axis planetary mixer and a forced double horizontal axis mixer

Differences in core mixing principles (the most fundamental difference)

1. Vertical axis planetary mixer

The central spindle drives multiple sets of mixing arms to revolve and blades to rotate, creating a three-dimensional planetary compound motion. The cylinder wall is equipped with side scrapers, ensuring no dead corners in the entire area; The material is simultaneously subjected to shearing, kneading, squeezing, and convective mixing.
The cylinder is a vertical cylinder, with a center driven vertically and no long axis passing through the cylinder.

2. Compulsory double horizontal shaft mixer

Two parallel horizontal mixing shafts rotate in opposite directions, and the blades push and shear horizontally; Only a planar two-dimensional stirring flow field, with a U-shaped groove horizontal structure of the cylinder, and two shafts passing through the left and right ends of the cylinder.

Difference between Mixing Uniformity and Suitable Materials

Vertical axis planetary advantage scene

1.Dry hard, ultra-low water material: refractory castable UHPC、 Permeable bricks, dry mixed mortar, and materials with extremely poor fluidity can also be mixed evenly;
2.Fiber containing materials: steel fiber, glass fiber, polypropylene fiber, evenly dispersed and not easily knotted or broken;
3.Ultra fine powder: silica fume, graphite powder, micro powder additives, with high mixing accuracy for trace additives;
4.Fragile aggregate/special aggregate: gentle mixing and kneading, low aggregate crushing rate;
5.Frequent material changes with multiple formulas: the cylinder has no grooves or dead corners, and there is very little residue left during tank cleaning.

Double axis advantage scene

1.Large flow ordinary commodity concrete: commercial mixing station, ordinary construction site pumping concrete;
2.Large flow continuous mass production of ordinary concrete: the aggregate is mainly sand and gravel, without fibers, and has a high water cement ratio;
3.Conventional concrete with no special requirements for mixing fineness and fiber dispersion.

Shortboard comparison

Double horizontal axle short board: U-shaped groove bottom, easy to accumulate material at the axle root; Fibers tend to clump together easily; Difficulty in mixing dry hard materials and poor uniformity; The seam between the two ends of the shaft is prone to material accumulation, making material replacement and cleaning difficult.
Vertical axis planetary short board: High flow large flow ordinary commercial hybrid, with slightly lower production capacity than double horizontal axis for the same volume, and higher purchase price.

Differences in Sealing, Leakage, and Maintenance Pain Points

Double lying axis

Two shafts pass through the cylinder on both sides, with a set of shaft end seals at each end. Long term grinding of sand and gravel is prone to wear, and leakage of slurry is a common problem; Frequent replacement of seals leads to material leakage, waste of raw materials, and contamination of equipment.
Vertical axis planet

The transmission structure is entirely located at the center of the top of the cylinder, with no shaft passing through the side walls, and only one seal at the center of the top; There is no leakage problem on both sides, the sealing service life is longer, and the cost of operation and maintenance consumables is lower.

Differences in land occupation and spatial layout

Vertical axis planet: vertically arranged in a vertical cylindrical shape, occupying about 30% less land area; High in height, suitable for prefabrication plants, refractory workshops, compact mobile stations, and narrow factory spaces. Can be paired with multiple discharge doors, one for multiple production lines.
Double axis: Horizontal U-shaped groove placed horizontally, occupying a large area and having a long width; Low in height, suitable for installation in open areas of large fixed commercial mixed use stations.

Transmission, torque and load capacity

Vertical axis planetary gearbox: a single hard tooth surface planetary gearbox with low speed and high torque, capable of handling high density, high viscosity refractory materials, and heavy dry materials without stuffiness; Single drive, with fewer transmission components and fewer fault points.
Double horizontal axis: dual motors+two sets of reducers synchronously driven; Large flow materials have sufficient power, but mixing ultra dry and hard materials can easily cause overload and blockage; Two sets of transmission components, with more parts for later maintenance.

Cleaning and material replacement efficiency

Vertical axis planet: The cylinder is smooth without grooves, the side wall scraper automatically cleans the cylinder wall, the bottom single/multi door unloads, high-pressure water flushes without dead corners, and switches between refractory materials, mortar, and concrete without a large amount of manual cleaning.
Double lying shaft: The two sides of the U-shaped groove and the root of the mixing shaft are prone to accumulation of mixed materials, and changing different formulas requires manual cleaning for a long time, resulting in serious cross contamination of powder and dark raw materials.

Capacity and mixing time

Ordinary flowing concrete: The double horizontal axis mixing speed is faster, and the single discharge volume of the same tank is large, suitable for large-scale commercial mixing production.
Special dry hard/fiber materials: The vertical axis planetary mixing time can be shortened by 20% to 35% to achieve qualified uniformity; The double axis requires extended mixing time and is prone to local unevenness.

Procurement and usage costs

1.Purchase cost: Under the same volume, the price of a vertical axis planetary is much higher than that of a double horizontal axis.
2.Usage cost:
Double axis: frequent replacement of seals, loss of raw materials due to slurry leakage, and high cleaning labor costs; The blade wears out quickly on one side.
Vertical axis planet: Wear resistant blades can be flipped for secondary use, with long sealing life and almost zero material leakage. The cost of comprehensive consumables for multi formula production is lower.

Accurate differentiation of applicable industries

1.Prioritize choosing vertical axis planets
Refractory material factory, steel plant castable, PC prefabricated components, UHPC products, permeable brick factory, graphite/ceramic powder, solid waste stabilization, small mobile special mixing plant, multi formula co production workshop.

2.Priority should be given to mandatory dual horizontal axis
Large scale commodity concrete mixing plants, large-scale pumping of concrete for road and bridge engineering, production of only single ordinary concrete, spacious site, and pursuit of low purchase budget.
